Somersault, part I

Prompt: He hadn’t seen her since the day they left high school

Somersault

Today was a usual day, at least at first it really was, until I saw her. Aubry. She looked like she was looking for someone. Shit. I hadn’t seen her since the last day of high school – and very grateful for that. I tried to cover my face with my drawing tube and walked past her. My heart started beating unusually fast, faster and faster with every step I took. Just when I thought she didn’t see me.
“Hi, do you know where design major building is?”
“This IS the design major building,” I said without caring to stop.
“Then can you show me where class AP 103 is?” Damnit. She never change, did she? ‘Get yourself some politeness, will you?’ I thought.
“You just have to walk straight and turn left. The class is the first one on your right. But after all, you probably shouldn’t even bother to go there. The class just cancelled,”. God! Why would I bother to answer at all?
“Oh, so you’re from that class! Do you know a ...” she looked at her phone. “Jace Brently?”
I think I heard it wrong. My breath hitched a little bit. What is she doing here? Why is she looking for me?
“Sorry, no,” I continued walking, this time faster. She looked confused for a while.
“Wait, wait, wait,” she runs toward me. I didn’t stop walking. “Wait,” she stood in front of me and touched my shoulder. I backed a little, disgusted. “You ARE Jace.” She wasn’t asking. She was making a statement. She knew.
“Look, I don’t know any Jace, okay? Now let me go home peacefully,”
“Oh,” she laughed, sarcastically. Just like old time. “You’re definitely Jace,”
I stopped. “Look. What do you want from me?”
She sighed. “Alright, I know that I was kinda mean to you in high school, but – “
“Mean? You made my life miserable!”
“Yes, I know. But it was high school! Will you get over it and hear me for a second?”
“Get over it? You spread rumors that I killed someone just because I dumped your friend which is also not true because we’re not even dating! Not just that, you and your little minions also went out with my friends to turn their back on me. No one dared to talk to me since then. I mean, how could that one problem that is not even a problem at all made you decided to turn my life into a living hell?”
“Alright, alright! I admit it! I was a bitch during high school. But that’s why I’m here, too. To make amends. Especially with you,” I rolled my eyes.
“You should just go back to your college, sorority, doll house, whatever it is girls like you called it.”
“Enough, alright? I’m here to make things right, not to make another mistake. So at least give me a chance.”
“What are you doing here, Aubry ?”
“I’m taking a gap year. Then I made this bucket list and one of them is ‘turn things right’ and so here I am,”
“And? How are you going to do that?”
“Well, I have no idea. I was kinda hoping you could help me with that.”
“What? How exactly am I gonna help you?” She raised her shoulder. “It’s Friday. Just, do whatever you usually do, and I just gonna follow you and try to … catch up?”
“Catch up? You talk like we were best friends or something. What am I gonna say to my friends? ‘Hello, this is the girl who made my life miserable’? Definitely no,”
“Just… anything, okay? Do whatever you want like I didn’t exist. I didn’t drive all the way here to do nothing,”
“You DRIVE here?” She raised her eyebrows. “And where are you staying?”
“The Gülden Cottage,” I stared at her for a while. I’m stuck with her. So might as well take advantage of it.
I rolled my eyes again. “Alright. I’m going to the beach today to do my assignment. If you wanna come along, then fine,”
“Finally! Let’s go!” she walked merrily like nothing ever happened.
